The picturesque Rebak Marina played host to a landmark event on July 28, 2024, marking the successful conclusion of the first-ever Rebak Island Social Regatta. This event holds particular significance as it’s the inaugural regatta since the marina began operations three decades ago.
A concerted effort by Rebak Island Resort & Marina Langkawi, local stakeholders, and key partners has positioned Langkawi as a burgeoning hub for nautical tourism in Asia. The regatta drew 22 international participants, signifying its potential to become a prominent event in Rebak Island’s annual calendar.
Hafiz Hashim, Cluster General Manager of Rebak Island Resort & Marina Langkawi, lauded the occasion, stating, “The Rebak Island Social Regatta aims to unite global marina dwellers with our zealous local sailing enthusiasts, promoting vigorous maritime engagement. This event is crucial for bolstering Langkawi in the realm of nautical tourism, aligned with the ‘Visit Kedah 2025’ campaign.
Echoing Hashim’s sentiments, Marina Manager Derrick Ven Deventer praised the meticulously executed planning and Langkawi’s world-class facilities that underpinned the regatta’s success. “This event showcases the extensive maritime capabilities of the island,” he noted.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Tengah Beach, the regatta featured an exhilarating mix of Monohull and Multihull categories that captivated both participants and spectators alike. Known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and easy access to popular tourist locales, Tengah Beach proved the perfect venue for this competitive nautical extravaganza.
The regatta welcomed a dynamic fleet: 8 catamarans and 14 monohulls, hailing from 8 different countries, underscoring the event’s international appeal.
The Rebak Island Social Regatta has set a high bar, exemplifying how community spirit and economic progression can intertwine to foster event success. As anticipation builds for future editions, Langkawi is poised to accelerate its reputation as a key player in global nautical tourism.
In thrilling competition, Steve Maine from the United Kingdom, helming Enavigo, claimed the Challenge Trophy. Following closely in the Monohull category were Frederick Florian from New Zealand with Lara Pinta as the 1st runner-up, and Sven Kaiser from Germany with Niobe securing the 2nd runner-up position
In the Multihull category, Nigel Signal from New Zealand steered Dark Horse to victory. The 1st runner-up spot was captured by Chris Morgan from South Africa with Dream Weaver, while Rob Azzopardi from Australia with North Star took the 2nd runner-up position.
